The Reverend Raymond Guzman, aka Reverend Angel, is a lifelong resident of Jersey City, a former fire response case worker and dispatcher for the American Red Cross, AmeriCorps literacy educator, an interfaith minister, and founder of the nonprofit organization Boricua Community Building Center.
Reverend Angel is passionate and driven. Inspired to stand up and fight for his community during the recession of 2009 after facing an illegal eviction, he organized a rent strike and won. During the same period, he graduated from Kean University with a Bachelor's in Public Administration with honors before attending Fordham University Graduate School of Social Work.
Raymond began his career in public service as an AmeriCorps literacy teacher at Rosa Parks Elementary School in the Orange School District. When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey in 2012, he joined the Disaster Action Team (DAT) of the American Red Cross to respond and assist shelter operations at the Jersey City Armory. He later became a mobile response case worker & dispatcher for the American Red Cross to assist families devastated by home fires within Hudson, Bergen, Essex, and Sussex Counties.
A Lincoln High School and Hudson County Community College graduate, Raymond is no stranger to community service. He has volunteered for numerous charities, including Let's Celebrate and Bergen County Homeless Shelter, as well as organized local blood drives with NY Blood Center.
He has further experience as an out-of-school youth mentor for the YMCA of Newark and is a Direct Support Professional for people with disabilities at YAI and the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey.
He is currently the founder of the Boricua Community Building Center, a nonprofit aimed at preserving Puerto Rican heritage. In his role, he helps bridge the gap between Puerto Rican families on the island with their descendants around the world while demanding social justice and economic opportunities for the people of Puerto Rico.
In 2019, Raymond suffered a serious work accident from an epileptic seizure that resulted in ten compression fractures throughout his spine, immobilizing him for several years. As a result of the accident, Raymond lives with chronic pain from degenerative disc disorder, osteoarthritis, and permanent bone and nerve damage to his spine. He tried cannabis for the first time as a medical patient and felt the benefits immediately.
He decided to educate himself on different kinds of cannabis and began developing CBD-infused organic honey and syrups to use without the psychoactive effects of THC. Raymond believes in bringing individuals of all demographics, ages, and backgrounds together to build a more inclusive community for everyone.
Through his cannabis business, he will be able to expand his community service and deliver more opportunities to benefit Jersey City residents and New Jersey.
Raymond works tirelessly with the community to expand youth LGBT opportunities, improve the quality of life in every neighborhood, and continue to create innovative cannabis solutions that benefit the elderly and people with disabilities. In showing his commitment to the LGBT community, Reverend Angel registered Buzzy Bee with the NJ Pride Chamber of Commerce and is applying for the LGBT Business Enterprise Certification.
Reverend Angel, as he is now called, resides in Jersey City’s McGinley Square & Lincoln Park neighborhood with his family. He is the proud son of 9/11 and COVID 19 survivors and the first in his family to graduate college. Currently, Raymond is working toward a Master of Business Administration at the New Jersey City University where he plans to complete his graduate degree online.
